Intention: How to Go For the Truth
By David on 1-18-2025
How do you really go for the absolute fucking truth. None of this mind bullshit, not pandering around, wondering in avenues and alleyways of phenomena and dead ends. How does one intend, go directly for the Truth, with their whole body, heart, mind, consciousness and all that is?
You kind of just do it.
Just Doing It
Let's take these two statements into consideration:
"I intend to smell this flower."
"I intend to directly experience myself"
I have a plant (flower) in front of me.
I have me right here.
"I intend to smell the flower"
When I intend to smell the flower, do I stay sitting back thinking about it?
I could. I could decide to stay leaned back, looking at the flower, thinking about smelling it, imagining what the smell might be like. Mmmm, it could be so wonderful! It might be something I have never smelled before. What if I don't like it? I intend to smell it, but right now, even though it is right here in front of me, I am not leaning forward to actually find out and know it's smell and instead stay thinking about what it could be like.
I could do the same thing when I intend to directly experience who I am. Even though the Truth of who I am is right here for me to lean into and know, I could stay back and edge around myself rather than just doing it.
What is the most real thing for you right now?
To notice what the most real thing is for you right now, is to notice the Object of Enlightenment. It is this object you want to continually intend to experience yourself as. What or who you are, is sensed or known as the most real thing to you now, so directly experience yourself as that now.
It's that simple.
It is called the Object of Enlightenment because it is that which came up upon intending to directly experience who or what you are. So, if there is a going for self enlightenment, then what comes up on your intention is the focus or “object” in which you check if it is the truth of you or not.
As someone once explained it to me, when intending to appear in the palace of truth, "you might end up in the torture rack or the garden, but either way go for the truth as it is now". What this means is the most real thing for you might be a sense of pure suffering or anger, or humor and love, or nothingness, but if it is the most real thing, go ahead and find out if that is the truth of you. Intend to directly experience yourself as "this".
What is "this"?
“This” refers to whatever the most real sense of self is right now. "this", to you, is whatever it is for you right now, but it's not that. Not that over there, not that what I want it to be, not that which might come, but this right now.
What is your this (the most real sense of who or what you are) right now?
Find Out if Its the Truth
Is that really who or what you are?
How can you find out for sure?
Well… check. Intend to directly experience yourself as this.
This is what is really going for it is. It doesn't mean "extra trying" to get the truth, it's more like the courage to face it right now as it is no matter what it is. And when you are willing to do that with all of your heart and being, with that courage and intuitive simple noticing, you've grabbed the live wire.
I kind of see it as this imaginative scene:
Imagine you are in a world of complete nothingness, just blackness. Not in a bad way, but just that there are no "things" in this world. There is just you and your body. In this world you are doing all the things you normally do, your walking in blackness, your picking up your coffee and holding the warm mug in your hand (but you just see you picking up what looks like nothing since we cannot see any "things" in this blackness, just your movements like your picking up and holding something). In this world you're leaning back laughing from something funny someone just said in a conversation that we cannot see. We see just you. Now you're keeled over yourself crying. Moving from scene to scene of all the things you do in life. It's a collage of your actions and movements in this world of blackness.
Suddenly this long tendril. Almost rope-like, almost like a plant tendril, like an ethereal rope of energy appears within grasp. Its end is slowly whipping back and forth almost taunting us to grab it. We look where this rope of energy goes, and all we can see is that it goes into the blackness, and we are unsure of where it ends.
We are curious, and we grab it. Suddenly, as soon as we grab it, we are yanked off of our feet and it begins to pull us into the mysterious direction in which it seems to be coming from. It scares us so we let go.
When we let go, we drop right where we are and stop. The tendril of energy stops pulling and again begins to whip, pace, back and forth slowly, waiting patiently for us to grab it again. We think about it, but first we start doing other things, and for a bit we are more interested in something else.
Eventually, we feel we have been at the spot where we dropped long enough and we begin to wonder if there is something more, something else, and we again notice the tendril. With curiosity and hesitation, we slowly grab the tendril once again.
Boom, we are suddenly flying through the air being pulled in the direction of where this rope is coming from.
Everytime we notice what the most real thing is for us in this moment, and intend to directly experience ourself as that, we have grabbed the tendril. When we notice what is actually the most real sense of ourself when inquiring into our true nature, and intend to directly experience ourself as that, we are grabbing that rope and are being pulled back to the truth of who and what we are.
How long are you willing to hold on?
Do you have the courage to see where it will lead?
It is Not a Searching, It is Simply What is Real Now
We do not need to search for ourself. We do not need to search for a truth of ourself. Searching for anything is searching for the "that" over there and missing the this.
There is no one person who is any better at this than another, because what the individual notices is what is the most real thing for them now! So you're not even searching for an improvement like it is a skill. It is just an understanding.
Do you understand that there is breath? Not what breath is made of or anything like that, just that you understand there is breath? Well, do you understand that there is something that is sensed as the most real thing right now? What is the most real thing for you right now?
You say, "Hmmm, yes, the feeling of my body in this seat.". Okay, wonderful! Is that feeling of a body in a seat who or what you are? Don't immediately answer yes or no.. Check it for yourself. Intend to directly experience yourself as that feeling of a body in a seat. It will either be the truth of you and you will know, or something new will come. And if something new does come, then find out if that is the truth of you.
You are grabbing the rope. You are being pulled back to the truth of yourself to know as simply as it already is known.
Thank you
